Encapping vomit and urine

December 20 2003 at 11:31 PM
Gary R. Heacock

I had an emergency call today from Mrs. Piffelton. Her college age kids had a party with lots of red wine and pizza while she was away.

During the night, the daughter got sick, upchucked a LOT onto the carpet. Red mess some 3 feet in diameter, plus more trailed into the bathroom. White nylon carpet. Mrs P., who is a great believer in Capture powder applied a bunch of it in a panic. That did not work. She then called me.

Before setting up my truck mount, I applied a lot of Bac-Out to the deposits. Same with some 10 pet urine deposits from her Muffie-Poo doggie woggie.

As I started cleaning out the mess, I noticed 2 pet deposits and 3 or 4 blobs of vomit under the edge of the bed's dust ruffle that did not get the Bac-Out.

Hmmm... I had some 50-50 Releasit in a spot bottle left from a couple days ago. I am gonna try that on the missed spots. Spray it on, agitate in, leave it alone for some 10 minutes while doing other work.

Finished with the main vomit deposit (It all came out) I went over the encapped deposits. Whaddya know- they came out 100% too!! Both vomit and urine!!

Working my way down the hall, at the end of the hall, here's another dozen or so urine deposits. The Releasit was about gone, but enough to do 2 deposits. The rest got Bac-Out. All of the deposits came out 100%.

That's some good stuff you got there, Rick!!

Oh yeah. Another story. A couple weeks back I was at the Bi-O-Kleen products factory picking up an order. Just inside the front door, someone had spilled something oily, about 12 inches diameter. Unknown substance, but I could feel an oil residue when I rubbed my fingers on it. I gave that a dose of Releasit 50-50 I had handy. No towel it up, just apply, agitate and leave alone.

Yesterday I was there again picking up an order, and checked the area where the oily spot was. I had wondered if it would wick back like lots of oily spots do. No sign of the original spot, no sign of residue from the Releasit. Just a clean overall area.

Like I said, this was just a couple steps in from the front door, and lots of traffic on this spot, so there would have been a tell tale wicking, or dirt from residue by now, if it would have happened, but did not.

High marks, Rick!!

OH yeah. Where Mrs Piffelton had applied the Capture, it DID NOT come out. The vomit mixed with it did come out, but I could still see the Capture powder mess. I do not recommend Capture powder for this purpose!!

Gary, I'm thrilled to hear that the Releasit is working so well for you!

I have to go on record by saying that encapsulation is not recommended for bio-contaminants. This an are where encapsulation is probably not the most appropriate tool. Bio-contaminants such as urine, vomit, feces, blood, sewage, etc - really should be cleaned with a quaternary disinfectant and HWE.

That being said, I have handled small contaminated areas such as vomit with encapsulation. Here's how I do it... First I'll treat the individual contaminated spot with a good disinfectant. I'll spray the spot with with enough disinfectant to completely wet the area (but not soaking wet) and then I scrub the spot with the Cimex to work the disinfectant into the fiber.

Next I go and clean the rest of the carpet while the spot soaks and dries. This allows plenty of dwell time for the disinfectant to tackle the bio-contaminant. Lastly I return to the spot and clean it like I would clean a drink spill... (aggressive scrubbing and application of a 50/50 dilution of Releasit). I am not positive that this method is 100% satisfactory from a hygienic standpoint but it always seems to correct the problem and restore the carpet to a suitable condition.

Keep up the good work Gary. And thanks for sharing your experience with us. I always enjoy reading the posts of an old carpet cleaning guru!

We have several Ethan Allen stores we Encap. The way we got them: I was doing a leather repair at the warehouse and saw these 5 huge spots. I asked the DM who was cleaning the carpets. She said they had been cleaned 5 times in the last year and the spots kept returning. I cleaned one and said if it doesn't come back will you let us do all the EA's?

She said sure?

Well with that said we now clean the Warehouse office and all the EAs in town..cool product Mr. Rick!
