fiberplus pad question?

May 29 2004 at 3:36 AM

I just got done cleaning a school around 5,000 Sq. Ft. I had to clean under a couple hundred tables, which was a real pain in the butt. Since this school is open 7 days a week from 7:30 A.M. to 10:30 at night, you can imagine the amount of traffic the carpet endures. The carpet hadn't been cleaned in six weeks, so I had to double pass and sometimes triple pass what I went over. Is it reasonable that I burned thru a set of fiberPlus pads in this scenario?

Your numbers sound reasonable.

FiberPlus pad life averages around 10,000 sq ft per set of pads. But that is just an average. On softer fiber, such as a nylon cut pile, the pads will last more than 10,000 sq ft. On coarser fiber such as an olefin loop the pad life will run less.

And then we also have to factor in the cleaning technique. For example if I clean a carpet with a moderate wet pass followed by a slower dry pass (this is the normal cleaning method for most carpets), we will average 2,000 sq ft per hour. A set of pads in this setting will last about 10,000 sq ft, or 5 hours of run time. But if we were to scrub slower, or make multiple passes, we could expect the pad life to decrease.

So a more accurate means of measuring pad life than stating sq ft averages might be to consider per hour averages. I think you will find that the pads will normally last around 5 hours in most case. They may go up or down from there due to fiber construction, as I mentioned up top.

So considering the conditions you described for this carpet, it sounds like you got average coverage from the pads. Another way of looking at it is this. How much money did those $6 worth of pads generate?

BTW guys, make sure that you run the pads till they're worn down to about 1/4". Sometimes folks are replacing the pads sooner than they need to be.

We went through a bunch of pad manufacturers different pads before we arrived at the pad we're now using. The pads have an elastomeric property that adds stability. And this manufacturer tells me that they build their pads with 20% more fiber than the competition. The filler material is less expensive than fiber. So these pads are a bit more costly to build. But they seem to be a good quality product.

We will also have 2 new pads in our line of pads for floor care. We'll soon have MONSTER Scrub Pads for tile floor scrubbing. This is a gray colored pad that's ideal for the higher rpm's of the Cimex. And we'll have LIGHTNING Strip Pads for tile floor stripping. This is a thin strip pad with an open weave that won't get easily clogged as you strip a floor. These new pads should be in stock in the next week or so.

Thanks for the response Rick. You are right on about the amount of time the pads wore down. I was there for exactly 5 hours. The costs of the pads don't worry me. Just wanted to make sure my pad wear was reasonable. Have a great weekend!
