Cimex and stairs - problem solved

September 28 2004 at 5:54 PM

For some time I've believed that bigger and softer tires on the Cimex would make it easier to go up and down stairs - but I couldn't find tires to fit on the huge axle of the Cimex.
Finally, I just went and bought some 13" tires, 5/8th inch axle, with the idea I was going to find some way to put them on.
I tried to think of different places to put the wheels but it all came back to the fact that they needed to be where the present wheels were. The only thing to do - run a shaft through the present wheels (off center of course). So, I drilled 5/8 inch holes in the plastic of the wheels, put a threaded shaft through, put on wheels and nuts and I've got a monster wheeled Cimex.
Time to put on and off - seconds. Effort to climb stairs - it seems like about half the effort.
I take them off to do the cleaning.

I've been looking for some too, but like you said the axle is so big. When i find some i'm going to get a another axle and have the ends turned down to the size. But it's got to help.

Cimex and wheels

O.K. - I'll get a picture out. In the meantime, go to Harbor Frieght and get the wheels. I paid $l4.00 each for mine and now they're on sale for $6.99 each. Don't you hate that - buy something and then all of a sudden it's on sale.
I got the threaded shaft (3 ft.) at Home Depot - $4.50, nuts - .23 each.
