Oxy Clean on grout?

September 29 2004 at 4:39 PM

Walked into a job site today where customer was using Oxy Clean powder and a vapor cleaner to do the grout lines in the lobby. Interesting to watch, but I like our methods better.

I've never really used Oxy Clean before, so can't say much about it. Does anyone have any experience with it to know:

Will it damage the grout?
Will it discolor it, or remove color from it so it ends up non uniform?
Any cautions to be aware of in using Oxy Clean for this purpose?

Thanks!

I have seen it lighten colored grout lines which then had to be restained. I love when homeowners use the stuff. More money for me

Hey, that was off topic!!

I wasn't looking at where I was, and I thought I was on John's board!

Anyway, thanks, John!!

Can any carpet cleaners out there explain the difference between the type of bleach that Oxi Clean is compared to plain old Clorox type? I am no chemist, so I need the 'little kid' explanation!

Thanks!

Oxy-Clean, and similar products are based on sodium percarbonate, which makes hydrogen peroxide when dissolved in water.

That's the bleaching action of these kinds of chemicals. There are several brands on the market, and some have other additives in them.

Clorox, Purex and similar products use sodium hypochlorite as a bleaching chemical. That's basically chlorine plus other stuff.

Chlorine versus peroxide.
