upholstery question & enpap

Hi, I have a woman that has a large love chair made out of 65% cotton & 35% ployester. It is white in color with biege patches in different areas. The tag on the love seat say not to use a water solution or to dry clean. The only real bad areas are the arm rests which are very dirty. I was wondering if I use a light solution on the chair and relesit on the arm rest would that be allright?

In my experience, I would use a cotton upholstery cleaner and whip it into a foam, apply it in a circular motion, then very quickly high spray the area you applied the foam to and vacuum it all up. Then get an air mover to dry the chair. The key is to remove the stain by minimizing the water. You may have to do this process a couple of times, but always make sure it is completely dry before you start again. It will turn brown on you very quickly if you get it to wet, or use the wrong ph. I do not suggest using Releasit on cotton uph. because I tried it and then spent an hour correcting the browning. Hope this helps.

Gary Heacock is bet ya has come across this in his Encap'ing furniture experiences. maybe email and ask him.

if it were me i would give the Releasit a shot and clean in an inconspicuous. seems to me if you rub it in with a hand bonnet, then extract with a clean dry towel and scrubbing it dry, you'd be safe. but ask mr. Heacock 1st.

thanx --- Derek.

probably body oils on those parts.
There isnt much of a way to clean this if you cant use water or
dry clean it.
You need to get the oils out.
I would wipe them with a solvent cleaner, towell off and vac really well first.
give it a shot.
Test the back under somewhere.

"Always assume that it will until you prove that it won't by testing."

I do think that Releasit will work fine though.
lightly mist, maybe use a sea sponge and work it up into a good lather, control any moisture and have at it.
Get a nice towell folded up and towell down quickly, dry.

should be fine.

Steve you are probably right about working Releasit into a lather, I never thought of doing that. That probably would work. It keeps your moisture to a minimum and then get it dry real fast.

yep, mix up about a 1/3 or 1/2 gallon in a bucket, saturate and totally ring out a sea sponge, and then use the spongs and clean it. This is 'real moisture control' to the max,
I think the Releasit will be fine. I have used in on all types of fibers.
This is evidently one of those tricky ones.
cant wet or dry clean it. LOL

There are a FEW really delicate materials that need special handling. This sounds like one of them.

Generally speaking. the cotton/polyester mix is pretty tough, and does not need special handling. The problem lies in whether the fabric is colorfast or not, and if it will shrink or not.

These are the only 2 factors in cleaning furniture.

The above advice is good. A well wrung out sponge- can be a natural sea sponge or a synthetic- they both work fine. Whip up the foam in a bucket and just apply the foam, or with a trigger sprayer, spray the fabric lightly and spray the sponge and agitate the soil loose, then follow with a folded towel.

If you go the spray route, one ounce of REL Double Strength in a quart of water should be about right. Strong enough to clean just fine, and not enough residue to be a problem.

By the way, at Winterfest as a sorta test, I put REL DS directly on a 100% cotton throw pillow, and some other items, including some silk, to see if there might be a residue problem. Nope. And that was the concentrate, so the dilute should not be a problem.

The next day, when dry, I checked to see if the fabric was stiff, darkened, water rings, etc. Nope. Some of the encapping crystals DID get brushed off with my hand, but there was no visible change in the appearance or texture of the fabric.

Oh yeah. The silk rug I used the same way, with the concentrate was OK too. BUT!! a week or so later, I rinsed it off with plain water wondering if there might be a residue, I DID get some foam in the rinse water.
