Has anyone used the Cimex to diamond hone a terrazzo floor and experienced unlevel grinding and exccessive pad wear?

Yes & No

Hi Ed

To answer your question; YES & NO.

Now here’s what I mean. I have done terrazzo jobs with the exact same set of diamonds and same weight and had different wear rates. It seems some terrazzo just seems to eat some grits more, if that makes any sense. On a concrete polishing job I just did, I averaged about 5/64ths of an inch per grit for 1650 sq ft. Most of the diamonds seemed to run pretty consistent except on two terrazzo jobs, I chewed up my 800s really bad. Everything else was as expected. Normally I’ll start at 120R or 220R or if it’s real bad 50R and work my way up to 1800R, powder polish and seal. On the concrete job, except where I exposed the aggregate and metal inlay, I went with 220M, 220R, Acid Stained twice, Densified, 220R dry, 400, 800, 1800 all dry. It took 1.5 Hrs to get across the floor when I was working wet and about an hour, maybe a little more when I was working dry. The floor turned out really well, I’ll include a link at the bottom of this if you’d like to take a look at the pics. If you look at them keep in mind, there is no roof on the house yet so the pics are badly washed out with sun light and there is very little contrast. It will look much better when there are walls and a roof.

I hope this helps you out at least some. If you ever want, feel free to call me I’d love to talk with you. I know all the guys here just want to make lots of money cleaning carpets so it’s kinda’ hard to find anybody around here to talk about hard surface care.

Take care and give me a shout sometime,

I'm just thinkin out load here, don't do grinding. But wouldn't a single large disk machine make a flatter floor than a 3 small disk machine?. To me a single disk will cut the high spots off, while a one with a floating head like the Cimex will follow the contours of the floor?.

The Cimex for Marble and Terrazzo

Brian,

The Cimex head pivots. This keeps machine flat. Whereas you steer a rotary machine so it's harder to keep it level. Plus the 3 pad drivers under the Cimex have rubber grommets that cause them to float.

And added to that the 400 rpm Cimex spins with over 6 times more efficiency per pass as compared to a 175 rotary. And the 880 rpm Cimex-DF "Diamond Finisher" spins with over 12 times more efficiency per pass as compared to a 175 rotary. Plus the DF comes with added weights - it's a monster.

The Cimex machines are serious scrubbers, and when it comes to Diamond grinding on a marble, terrazzo, or concrete floor - there's absolutely no comparison.

hm, guess sombodied hafta prove that one to me, I figure thats why we use a 4' level instead of a 6" one, and a 4' or 6' bull float when finishing concrete.
