Did I take too long?

January 5 2005 at 6:09 PM

Joe DeSouza

I did 38k of commercial carpet with my 15" cimex and releasit. It took me about 38 hrs to do it. That included lugging everything on elevators all by myself, and sometimes taking 2 trips between floors to get it all. That comes out to 1,000 ft/hr. Does that seen right? I was hoping to get at least 1300-1400 ft/hr with it. I basically priced out the job figuring 2,000 ft/hr, then I realized that figure was for the 19" cimex. I want to be around the $100 - $150 / hr range if I can, but I fell short of that this time.

Any advice so I can price the next job right?!

Thanks!

Joe

PS I did it with a single wet pass, no dry pass needed in this case.

Seems about right to me, others will disagree.
Most production numbers posted by manufacturers are on the high side.
38k and a one man operation is not bad, a 19" machine would have gotten you to the 1300/1400 range
In the future price your jobs according to what you just did on that 38k job. We all work at different speeds so you need to establish your own production speed and not listen to what others claim to produce per hour.

Joe that sounds about right if you are including the time for pre-vacuuming as i assume you are. it takes me longer than what most others report as well. i assume this is because i take a long time pre-vac'ing.

thanx --- Derek.

Joe, that does not sound excessive to me.

I hafta say that I usually don't meet the speed demons I see posting here or elsewhere. Maybe I just need more caffeine.

I seem to slow down and do more detail like a bad habit, but I am happy with the results, so I'm not sweating it.

We recently did a 25,000' office in about 26 hours, so it is about the same.

That is probably about right for a one man crew. We usually work two man crews so I am used to being able to go a little faster because of that. For a one man show your time sounds right.

Also think of it this way. If you had a TM you would have gone much slower.

I disagree, Truckmount time would be similar, just that the operator would exhausted after the job.

Thanks for the advice!! I will price a little higher next time. I am still blown away by the cimex / releasit combo, and the response that I get from my clients!! Its great to know that my 2 biggest clients KNOW about encap and PREFER it over HWE because of the dry times, in particular.

It does worry me a bit though...one of them is asking TOO many questions and has done research on encap; I think they want to buy their own system. They currently have their own HWE system and a big staff of employees. Maybe if I keep my prices right, they will keep me instead of buying their own.

Don, I don't know about you but with that size of job you would be lucky to average 500-800 sf per hour with a TM. I don't think I am off base here. It would take longer with one TM vs. one Cimex.

the time it would take Don to clean it, Kevin to clean it & me to clean it, would be 3 different times...no biggie, there is no law that says it has to take a CC'er "X" many hours to clean 1k sq.ft. of carpet.

no disagreements necessary fellas, we can move on

thanx --- Derek.

I usually just price my jobs as if each will take 1 hour to do 1000sqft. Works every time. Ex. I approach a retail store that is 3000sqft. I offer to clean it for $300. This is much lower than anyone else has ever quoted so after my demo they want it cleaned. Took me 2hrs and 45 min with my 19" cimex. I walk away with $109 per hour and the town did throw a parade and I got the key to the city and they renamed main street Cimex Blvd.
