14" pneumatic tires...

i can't seem to find them on the internet. sure i see some on McMaster site, but according to their site, the kind that would work on the Cimex are called "Offset Hubs" and the largest i see there is 10.4".

anyone can steer me in the right direction (site addy) ?

i will be checking local hardware stores tomorrow, but i am not too optimistic i will find the exact (14") size pneumatic tires i want.

thanx --- Derek.

i bought a pair...

January 8 2005, 12:05 AM

lol

well i found a pair @ HomeDepot...they measure 13.5" tall....i was shooting for 14" tires but after checking 4 stores, this was the closest.

for the axle, i picked up a 2' length of re-bar (not sure yet if that is wide enough). to hold the tires on i grabbed a pair of connectors from the electrical department. to keep the tires from sliding inwards, i grabbed a 10' length of 3/4" pvc pipe which i will cut down and fit over the re-bar...it will act like a sleeve in the center of the re-bar, to keep those tires in place.

i will take pic's of it as i put it all together and post them....may take a couple weeks as i am inherently a procrastinator.

they had 18" tires also, i may buy them to and see if they'd be better for pulling the 'Mex up a staircase....then return the pair i don't want. i'll keep y'all posted

thanx for the idea mr. Newman!

take care and have a great weekend fellas --- Derek.

Re-14" tires

January 8 2005, 11:30 AM

Derek - I'm not sure you have the picture yet.
First of all, you will need an axle of at least 27". Secondly, since the big wheels will be to the outside of the "old" wheels, you don't need something to keep them from going to the inside.
I'm not sure you yet see the simplicity of the idea, the central point of what we're doing.
If you see the following you see everything - the new axle goes through the "old" wheels! The "old" wheels hold the axle in place. The "old" wheels have 5/8" holes drilled in the "spoke" area of the "old" wheels. The new axle goes through the holes in the "old" wheels, the new tires are placed on the new axle, and all you then need is something to hold the new wheels on.
I suggest 5/8" threaded bar from Home Depot for the axle and nuts for the bar to hold the new wheels and tires in place. This makes it easy to put on and take off the big wheels. Takes about 15 seconds.
The threaded bar comes in 36" lengths.
I repeat - look at your Cimex. Imagine an axle going through the wheels that are presently on your Cimex. Imagine what you would have to do to get that axle to go through the wheels. Imagine the wheels on the axle that has gone through the wheels. Got it?
It's so simple that it's hard to see.

Re: Re-14" tires

not hard at all Bo. i figured the new tires would/might rub up against the old tires and irritate my efforts of pulling it up stairs, the sleeve would stop that from happening. what i didn't think of was now i'd have to drill bigger holes through the rim/spokes of my 'Mex...may not be practical.

i can't fully imagine how it'll be until i start working on her. you've done it so i guess the new tires hitting the old ones isn't a variable.

so if 27" clearance is needed, i will be exchanging the 2' rebar for a 5/8" threaded bar.

thanx for your help and clarification Bo!

the un-perspicacious one --- Derek
