A question about stubborn coffee stainsJanuary 23 2005 at 8:59 PM |

| I recently encapped a physical therapy center, and the results turned out great except for some coffee stains in the lobby area that wouldn't completely come out. I spent lots of time on these stains, even encapping twice- at the beginning and end of the evening. They faded some, but were never entirely removed. I will probably be cleaning quarterly, so would like to take another run at these stains the next time around. Any suggestions on products or methods that might work? Thanks. |

If you have any Bac-Out,I would give that a try.Apply enough to cover the area, let dwell about five-ten minutes. Then put a folded white towel, weighted of course, for the remainder while you're cleaning or instruct to have someone remove after 24 hours.I've also had good luck using a coffee, tea stain remover misted on.

I've had a lot of luck with Stain Absorb for coffee and tea spots. |

Steve, your going over these spots twice may have been the problem.
wickback occurs because moisture is left in the carpet...so the less moisture used to clean the better. for spots, less cleaning solution and more agitation is better.
along with a weighted towel, you can also put a blower on the spots.
50/50 mixture of Releasit DS / Water works well also....spray it on (don't overwet it), then agitate with the 'Mex / FP pads. give it a shot.
thanx --- Derek. |

Great suggestions above. I agree with all of them.
Bac-Out is a good product that may work to some degree on these stains. And the trick above with 50/50 Releasit works extremely well too. The 50/50 mixture is excellent for stopping wicking. The 50/50 approach will fix the recurring spots just about 100% of the time.
With very hot coffee, STAINING can sometimes occur. For example if you're dealing with a dyed nylon carpet the following problem can happen with the presence of extremely hot liquids. In the manufacturing process of the carpet fiber, hot dye is introduced to the fiber. The dye sites open up to the hot dye and accepts the color. In the situation with HOT coffee the same thing can occur. The dye sites can open up and accept the addition of the coffee's color. There is little hope for this scenario aside from doing color repair.
However in most cases what you're dealing with is a tannin stain. So you will need to use a good coffee stain remover to eliminate the brown stain. DSC and Chemspec have very good coffee stain removers. And many of the other manufacturers have good coffee stain products too. These coffee stain removers can be used to try to reduce the tannin stain. But don't over-promise because it's always possible that some of the brown stain will not come out completely.

I've gotten a couple out that came back 3 times with Punch, sprayed on lightly, and run over with a rotory and a new white pad, took a couple times, a couple days apart so as to not overwet, but it worked.
