Gum Removers

May 14 2005 at 5:45 PM
Garrett

I recently had a Res customer who had some gum issues. Having left my citrus solve at home, I ran across the street to AutoZone and found some GoJo hand cleaner.
Later that week I was at my local Jan store, and the owner says those types of hand cleaners contain " Delimoline" which could possibly delaminate the carpet fibers. Is that possible?? I've been using GoJo for years, and have never had any problems.. Anyone esle heard of this possibly happening?? Thx for any input.. :0)

Sure can...about 25% and more if I recall from my manufacturing days.

The whole idea of "GoJo" and other waterless hand cleaners is to have a product that requires no water to work on the hands (although water is in the product and is necessary for complete removal). It also had to be a very good grease solvent; therefore the solution was to combine a solvent (and nowadays that solvent is d'limonene or something similar), an emulsifier and water along with a few additives to prevent chapping. We added various grades of volacanic ash and corn husks to provide added abrasion.

A good WHC is what they call a ringing gel; bang it on the table and it resonates like a bell.

And solvents like d'limonene are strong enough to dissolve the latex in the carpet backing, so can cause delamination.
