Marble Question

May 18 2005 at 7:28 PM

Joe

A commercial customer of mine just had marble installed in a very large area. I was wondering what kind of maintenance he will be needing, and how soon. I want to find out more about maintaining marble so maybe I can buy the 19" cimex and add this room to a maintenance program!

Thanks - Joe

PS He had a crew with a floor machine stripping what looked like wax or grease on the marble after it was installed. does marble come protected with a coating?

What you saw the guys doing with the new marble floor installation was probably removal of the lippage. This should be done with a new floor install. Do you recall seeing a white colored liquid on the floor? This would be the marble slurry.

As far as maintenance goes. Marble floors get scratched. A few months with average traffic conditions and you can expect some significant scratches. You can powder polish the floor on a regular basis to maintain a killer shine and help camouflage some of the light scratches. And they'll also need grinding periodically too. When folks install marble they're signing on for one of two things...
1. A regular schedule of marble care and a corresponding budget.
2. Or a terribly neglected looking floor.

Marble is just like carpet or VCT - maintenance is required. But in the case of marble, the floor itself as well its maintenance are CONSIDERABLY more costly.

You'll come to appreciate that marble floors have a unique odor to them...
it's called money.

for the answer. now...where can I PROPERLY learn how to maintain marble using the cimex? Is there someone that holds training classes for marble care using the cimex alone?

Thanks!

www.mbstone.com or www.ntc-stone.com

Both folks offer in person training classes. I took Maurizio's class and loved it. He's an interesting guy,

Clay makes a good recommendation above,
there's no substitute for knowledge.

In addition, my brother Dave and I will be putting together some basic instructions on how to grind/hone/polish stone with the Cimex machine.

The instructions will cover the basics of marble restoration. It ain't rocket science. I'll try to get this put together ASAP.
