Water, water every where?

I know this ? might sound dumb, but here goes.

A few years ago I did a res carpet job (HWE)using a porti unit.

The customer balked at me using his water and asked how was I going to compensate him fo it.

Well I ended up walking away from the job with next to no $ in hand.

It was back in the 1980's and the job was only a $40.00 job.

My ? to the board is what do you guys do, do you bring 10 gallons of water from home or do you use the customers water?

Thanks

It has never happened to me. If it did I would give him $1.00 back and told him to consider it paid. What's next charge me for the electricity?

While I am retired now, I worked in the business over 40 years, and never had a customer ask for compensation for water.

While running a portable, I did have one customer ask for compensation for electricity though.

Very simple. I gave her a dollar.

She paid me the full amount.

I would think that ploy would work for water too.

I sincerely doubt you- or me- would use more than a dollar's worth of water or electricity.

while i've never had it happen, it was a concern of mine when i started with a porty 7 years ago. a friend and i determined that a dime would cover the 10-20 gallons of water.

but otherwise, yes i would always try and bring my own water. now with my 'Mex i bring my own and when i run out i use the facility's / residences water, no problemo.

thanx --- Derek.

Several years back we cleaned 11 stores in a mall. The water supply for all the stores came from a meter billed to the one large anchor store. They objected to us using their water to clean other stores. Demanded we track the water usage and compensate them for it.

We knew how much our waste tank held. So we counted how often it was emptied to get as figure for waste water. Then we added 25% to cover water used that was not extracted. Called the local water company and asked the charge for that volume of water. BAck in 1980 it was pretty cheap. The total water we used cost 8 cents! A gave the manager of the anchor store a dime and told him to keep the change.
