| Rick- you can delete this if you want, it's just something I saw today that amused me, or keep it, no loss if deleted.
Sitting on a bench outside the supermarket while my wifey-poo is inside shopping, watching the passing parade of humanity going in and out, I see coming out a VERY tall man, at least 6 foot 6 to 6 foot 8, and VERY obese, probably weighed around the 400 pound mark, towing a TINY Rug Doctor carpet rental machine. The machine was so small, he had to stoop to reach the handle to tow it along.
The machine was the smallest and I am certain the cheapest to rent. I am talking maybe 14 inches wide, and 20 inches tall, one of the self contained models, no hoses, just fill it up- probably 3 gallons or less, it sprays and vacs all in one operation.
Undoubtably a model made for an average sized lady to use.
The store has several sized models for rent.
I say to myself- I can imagine the conversation between him and the store clerk- "Which machine is the cheapest?"
This one. "OK, I will take it".
Now, he is headed home, and is certainly due for a sore back, bending over this machine, and dragging it over the carpet.
His car was parked where I could see him load the machine. He lifts it with one hand and plunks it in the trunk.
I guessed it weighed about 20 pounds.
Good luck on getting his carpet cleaned with it.
Well, I did say I was easily amused.
If there is a moral to this story, put one in yourself, I have none.

Delete that? Not likely.
The musings of an old wise man are always welcome here.
Moral or no moral, I enjoyed your story. Thanks for sharing.

Mr. Heacock,
Forgive a relative newcomer to the business who has read your past posts with anticipation of what I might learn. The moral to your story? For those of us who wish one day to be as respected as you are to learn that what some people would not even give a thought about doesn't get by the attention of a well respected and experienced carpet man! Only a true carpet cleaner would even notice that whole event, much less imagine what transpired inside the store. A great story and a great eye. Again, those of us who wish to be half as respected as you are can learn alot from that!
Have a great day.

Thanks for alla the kind words.
I gotta go now, I am late for the Geezers Anonymous meeting.
Or was it the Procrastinators Anonymous?
Or was it the Alzheimers Anonymous?
I forget.

Thanks Gary, I can relate to that...........I think, I think.
Sort of like the mouse in love with the elephant.
I bet you also are a great photographer with an eye for detail.
All the best,
Shorty. |

| Boy, did I really say that?? | July 20 2005, 6:44 PM |
Gosh, my blood pressure has been way high recently and I have been given meds to get it down. Sometimes in the morning, before it kicks in, I'm a little outta my head. Gary, I meant all I said as a compliment, but I certainly didn't mean to sound like such a kiss a**! lol
My apologies!! |

Back when I first started doing this type of work, we use to turnover clean apartments.
I bought a cheap portable to clean carpet. It came with a 25' hose. Some of the apartments were 2 stories and the portable hose wouldn't reach the upstairs.
I had a big college football lineman working part time for me. Instead of pulling the portable up the stairs he would pick it up and hold it while standing in the stairway with 15 gallons of water in the portable.
