| Rick, Dave etal. Is there a way to do a demo on a small area with releasit and a pad by hand? Will that work? I don't really want to drag the cimex in for a walk through bid. I'm bidding on stripping and refinishing VCT and want to add on the encap. He has a 14,000 sqft show room, and only 1000 sqft or so of vct.

Hi Peter
I would haul in a rotay or cylindral brush if you do not want to
bring in the Cimex.
Personally if it was me I would bring in what ever I was going to use
to clean with, but a rotary would give them a good enough idea

I think the Cimex would be more impressive than a rotary. Especially when you tell them you had it imported from England. If you just wanted to demo a small spot, you could use the drill driver and a spray bottle and just do a 2x2 area. Just be sure and tell them you've got larger equipment than your craftsmen cordless drill!lol

I’m with the other guys on the demo with the Cimex. It’s just gonna look tuffer using this monster machine on their carpets. You know, showing them three heads are better than one sorta’ thing. But if you want to do something by hand, Rick’s 8” backer pad will work nicely on your hand grinder. Just unscrew the drill shank and it will screw onto the 5/8s drive on your grinder. Or for a “Get by”, through a pad center on your 4” backer pad and a small pump up sprayer and you’ll be good to go.
Hope you get the bid and have a great week end.

I agree with the advice above. Bring on the most impressive elements of your service when you're doing a presentation. The Cimex is a COOL looking massive scrubber. Use it to make the custy go WOW! Doing it by hand would sell your strengths short IMHO. As Joe Polish told a room full of Connections attendees yesterday morning... be ENTHUSIASTIC about selling yourself. So pull out the big guns.

Respectfully, I would drag in the piece of equipment and show him an actual demo from it.
From your post.. there is 14x as much money to be made with the cimex and carpets,, versus VCT.
Get that bad boy in da house' and demo it.
The one lift in and out of the big yellow monster may just be the piece that seals the bid.
Just my sentiments.
Best of luck.

| Demo Backfired!! | September 26 2005, 10:46 AM |
I have a daycare that has signed up with me they have two locations. When I approached them they had just had another cleaner and there were recurring spots all over the place a couple that bugged the customer. So I told them when school was closed (last week) I'd do a demo and get the spots. So the owners husand lets me in and is watching me proud as heck as I'm eating up the spots/stains, well his eyes are wide and he says man is that all there is to this "I can't believe it, where do you get that machine". Well I'm stammering about how I'm trained and certified, etc. But I could tell he's thinking I can pay for this and save myself $3000 per year!! So my little demo could of cost me the account. From now on I do it go have coffe and come back and show them the resuls. Or Rick puts me on commission. (just kidding) I still do think a demo is the best selling tool. |

Rlord, That happens some times when you do a demo. Your only option to make any money off it is to sell him the info of where to get what you used. Your time and money are worth something I would not give it away for free. People think nothing of STEALING intellectual property, look at napster. Other than that remind them they are in the business of daycare not cleaning carpets and maintaing the equipment. Just say NEXT.
Everybody else that responded to my post thanks. I went ahead and pulled the machine in the store. Dressed in a nice polo shirt kaki pants and dress shoes. I did not even break a sweat lol. I think anything else would have required more effort. I had some solution left in it from doing my own carpets at home this weekend. I did about 100 square feet for him off to the side of his show room. A nice nasty pop spill in a traffic lane approaching the restrooms. The area looked great and he was most impressed with the fact it was not soaked as well as how clean it looked.
Rick G, This carpet is a very short cut pile commercial grade carpet. There was a scrub pattern in the carpet that easily brushed off by hand. After drying will this pattern walk and vacum away or do you have to brush it while wet? The same scrub patterns at my house easily vac'd away the next day. Will repeated cimex scrubbing untwist the strands or cause other damage?
Oh btw They were impressed by the big blue and yellow machine.
Thanks to all,
Pete |

Hey Pete.
I can answer a couple of those.
NO, the Cimex will NOT damage anything,, repeated use or leaving it in place and going to eat lunch.. lol
Atleast with the tan pads. You could do possibly a bit more with the gray, aggressive pads but I dont use them all that often.
About the circular pattern.. I prefer to brush mine out as I go along. I dont see the low, cut pile carpets all that often. Mostly the typical, tuff commercial glue downs.
I find that the tracks are harder to remove when dry.. on the low, cut pile ones.
In residentials,, taller true cut piles.. I find that you can remove them about anytime.
Just my experience.
I find it better to 'set the nap' while I am going along.
Best of luck

When I bring the cimex into a job. I have a 5 gallon bucket from Home Depot with my juice in it. If I have to make another batch I have premeasured encap in a 1 gallon
jug. I try never to give to much info. I have a job this Saturday and the maint manager is very interested in what I'm using. I just told him I'll be using a special mixture that I put together. I am there to clean not to give away anything.

Pete, I have several commons areas with a dark green cut pile that I've encapped monthly for about 18 months now. Several times with a 375 rotory and now with a Cimex. No damage to carpet thatI can see. In front of the elevators swirls are gone in one day, on "back door" halls, some of the swirls are still there after a month of vacuuming. Everybody here seems to like them, not heard anything bad about them.

If you want to work - demo or otherwise - without someone standing over your shoulder, try this technique. "I'm sure you'll want to see the results. I'll come get you when I'm done. Where will you be?" a not so subtle hint that you don't expect them to stay and watch.
