? about a spot

September 29 2005 at 5:52 PM
Joe M

Went to my Dr.s office today for a check up and noticed he had new carpets.

Talked to his office mgr and asked if I could give the doc my card.

She told me they had called Che$ D&y for a spot to be removed and they were

very unhappy with the price of Che& D(y.(the real name with held, but I think

you can guess who it is).

The spot was about an inch to an inch and a half of oil from the door pistion

at the top of the door.

They were charged $90.00 for the spot. Doc was told we have to charge

according to the room size as if we were cleaning it.

Needless to say I gave the doc my card.

Now my ? is what would remove that spot of oil from the door?

Sorry for the long story before getting to the question.

Dry solvent and a white towel.

You could try an encapsulant if you have some.. but if you have a spotting kit,, use a good VDS,, volatile dry solvent.. a white towell like Jeremy eluded to.
I use BP Solvent Clean..
put it on.. agitate it a bit and towell it out.
It doesn't need rinsing..

You could use a citrus gel.. then use some water and a towell to rinse it out.

There are a number of options.
If you have a TM,, you can use the above,, WD40 and flush..

Thats a pretty easy spot to get out. should take about 5 minutes.. tops.. no charge.. then drop your card off.

That company should be ashamed.

A 1" x 1" grease spot, a couple of minutes and 90.00
And they wonder why we have a blackeyed industry.

Geesh o' peete.

I have great success with a 50/50 mix of releasit on a host of spots to include some grease. It is my main spotter.

I have to admit that my min. service call is only $89.00 but I'd clean the room along with it.

I agree. I have a minimum charge of 99.00

I guess, which we dont' know... is how long they had to drive.. etc.

Most of my work is within 10 mins of the shop. I know.. "lucky"" and yes, I am.

so i could swing by and make a cheerleader out of that situation.

On the other hand, If I had to drive a half an hour,, which I wouldn't unless it was agreed, it would be different.
But then I would take care of that on a trip whenever i had to go by there.
I wouldnt drive 20 or 30 mins for a 2 min. job. Not even for the money.

Thats a marketing situation, IMO>.. not a profiting situation.

Maybe thats just how I see it.
You can make 89.00 as they did and never see another chance to work for that DR. or any of his employees again, let alone all that they tell. But do that for free, Hey, what's 2 minutes of your life.. thats all that it would have took., and then passed out a few cards, said hi.. send some candy or doughnuts.. and bam, you now have cheerleaders and clients for life.. If there were 4 workers in that office you could have landed, , them with the reference pyramid off of them , over a life time of a company, could go well over 100k.. very easily.

So I ask you.. 100,000.00 + or a mere 89.00 and the backlash that is following that company??

You answer that keeping in mind that there is no right answer. Just a smarter one.

Thats how I look at it

A freebe of all about 2-3 min tops and they would have had a customer for

life, (nice office too).

I bet even the office staff of 5 would have called them for cleanings.

So yes they made $89.00 and maybe lost years of repeat business which I hope

that I will pick up.

Also thanks for all the help. All you guys are tops.

Some VERY good advice above.

I will add- for the first effort, I would use ordinary drugstore rubbing alcohol as a VDS, then towel up. Then if it did not come out, go to a stronger solvent.

A tough call as to whether to make a charge or not- I would think how long it took- say 2 minutes or less- no charge. Longer, maybe a minimun chsrge.

The good will you would get from a freebie is impossible to calculate.

That's the way I see it anyway.
