Pics of Craig Walton's Concrete Grind & Polish

October 12 2005 at 4:56 PM

Rick Gelinas

Here are some photos that Craig Walton sent me.

He was having trouble posting them so I posted them for him.

I'm not sure what the first picture is.

But the last 3 photos show how Craig used his Cimex grinding/polishing attachments to grind and polish his garage floor.

I'll let Craig come along and fill in the details.

Nice work! You got a BIG TIME shine out of that concrerete Craig!

What stones or discs etc are best to remove an old finish from a garage or driveway?Or would some other method be preferable.

Thanks

Thanks Rick for posting these pictures. The first picture is using the tile and grout brushes, prepping the tile getting it ready to apply a non-slip treatment. The next pictures of my garage (my wife was after me NOT to show everyone my cluttered garage)I was really happy with how it came out. Thanks to Ricks brother Dave, who I called for a little advice on applying the densifier, to help harden the concrete.
As far as how it will hold up outside, I think it should be fine, and I was suprised at how non-slippery it was even when I wet it down.I have heard if you apply densifier and continue polishing it won't need sealed, but I'm not an expert, I think Dave Gelinas could better answer that.
As far as prepping old concrete floors, the Cimex is extremely versatile, and Rick just resently posted pictures and prices on different brushes, scarifier, and diamond scraper for floor prep.I think I will try and market floor prep as well. Thanks again Rick.

Re: Pics of Craig Walton's Concrete Grind & Polish

Several years ago I attended stone maintenance and restoration school at VIC International in Knoxville TN. One of the reasons I did not pursue concrete polishing was because the equipment cost $14,000 (that was just the grinder with a vacuum port) and the vacuum itself was another $8,000 I think. Anyway, part of the jist of the course, as I recall, was that when polishing concrete, we created alot of dust, thus the need for the vacuum to keep the dust out of the air and also out of our lungs. Keep in mind that as far as honing marble and such, we learned to that wet. Did you do a wet grind of the concrete? If so, you have peaked my interest, as I could probably make a buck or two with that!!
Thanks.

Yes, I wet ground the first steps, 70 grit metal, 120 metal,220 , densified, then 220 resin dry, 400 dry, and 800 dry. The last dry steps did not make alot of dust , as the lower grits had done most of the work.If I pursue this much there are good respirators to help with the dust, not the cheap-o dust mask, a real half face respirator for 30-50.00.

Kevin, I think if I pursue this concrete polishing, I would get the 24 inch Cimex Marble polisher as a minimum, along with a heavy duty HEPA vacuum , then you can polish wet or dry. Rick sells the 24 inch machine for 4195.00 and is the minimum way to go, imho. Not as fast as the 14,000.00 set up you saw, but for residencial, light commercial, I think thats the way I will go.
If you have the regular Cimex put extra weights on , get some diamonds and go for it.Try it, you'll like it!

Thanks, Craig. I may eventually. I actually re honed a rather good sized floor and got stuck for $6,400.00. I'm a little reluctant to try again in eastern NC....at least right now. Your floor looks fantastic. I may try mine and then use my own photos to sell it. Good luck. I'm sure you'll do fine.

Concrete Grind and Polish

Hello Craig, how much do you think it would cost to do a job like yours? Materials separate (your cost) and how many hours to complete your garage?
Looks great, nice job, now I will experiment on my garage.
