You may want to see what Consumer's Report has to say about Rainbow vacuums. I think there are much better vacuums for residential carpet.
There are ways to show the dirt you collected with other vacuums. I like the dirt meter that fits some of the PowerFlite vacuums. You can put a white filter cloth in the air stream of many vacuum cleaners.

Not only do I use my Rainbow very successfully on residential accounts, but I also used to sell them too (that's how I got mine).
Scott is correct about the cloth in the hose, in fact if you bought your Rainbow from an authorized seller and had the demo then you should have seen them do that during the Rainbow demo.
Commercial carpet and Rainbows are not the best mix however. The same reason why a RotoVac with brushes will not encap as well as a Sprint or Cimex- not enough weight. Also pulling R2D2 around a huge commercial account is a pain the butt. I use my Wally World Bissell Clearview for that.
The one downside- other then the high cost (I'd buy used- not new) is the extra time it takes to fill and dump the water.

Having owned 2 vacuum stores over the years, I have to say that
Rainbo falls in with 3 other overpriced vacuums. Kirby, Filter Queen and Electolux. I read the CR report a few years ago and agree with it completly. I am in agreement with that report about the amount of microscopic dirt spewed back into the air, even after it passes thru the water. Have you ever wondered why they are only sold door to door (I know Lowe's is selling the cheaper version of Electrolux) My son and I were doing a show in Atlanta last Feb. and there was a Rainbow booth across from us, and they were getting upwards of $1800.00 for them. $699.00 will buy you a top of the line Miele (oldest vac company in the world) that will outclean and outlast all of the above. |

putting a spot light on a rainbow's hood will show some of the dust it spews back into the air keeping the unit in one place and putting white towels around it will also do this.
I used this when I was selling TriStars(formerly Compact) door to door
years ago
Meile did not get to be the oldest with out knowing somthing, they are very dependable |
