Your carpet's dirty

March 5 2006 at 10:58 PM

What would be a tactful way of telling someone their carpet is dirty? I need to come up with something persons beside myself can say to get my service introduced without sounding insulting.

What kind of loser are you? You're a pig. Clean your carpet, for crying out loud!

I think that sounds like a pretty sensitive approach.
You should give that a try on the side of your truck

Talk about what you can do - not what the customer did not do.

Remember- carpet is "soiled", not dirty.

Let me rephrase

March 6 2006, 9:57 AM

I can tell someone they have soiled, dirty, whatever carpets. I'm in the business.

Suppose the computer tech or the copier repair person was selling getting my foot in the door. It would seem out of place for them to bring into a conversation, "you're carpets soiled, why don't you call George".

Looking for an easy lead in for people outside of the cleaning business to open the door. Something like walking up on an old spill stain and stopping and saying "oh, is this wet?". If it gets a response, they could then say "I know someone that could help you with these stains".

The idea is they're not selling my product only looking for an introduction.

I do like the pig part, however.

Here's what I think. People know if their carpet is soiled. It usually doesn't have to be stated. So, have the individual say "I've noticed your carpets, if you are interested in having them cleaned I can recommend someone."

I tend to say something like this.....

"Ma'am, if you dont mind me asking, have you had your carpets cleaned recently"? "The reason I ask, is that I notice that they may be pre-maturely (sp?) soiled" "Now that can be due to excessive amounts of traffic, or that the person or company who cleaned them last did not do the best job of removing the residue left by the solution that they were using". "I'm sure that I can remedy the situation and have your carpets looking great in just a few hours"

This way, its not insulting, and capitalizes on the fact that YOU are the chosen one....not the guy that cleaned 'em 3 years ago. You are the knight in shining armor....do the job, rock their socks, and pick up a customer for the long haul. Oh, did I mention the quarterly maintenance agreement offer?

Key word being offer...I don't believe in any pressure selling, or misleading, what-so-ever

Hope this helps

**Just noticed what this thread is actually about** Sorry
