For a 1.5 hp industrial motor Honda power equipment's website recommends a 6500 watt generator. An electric motor pulls more juice as the motor starts up, and then it goes down to a normal operating load once the motor is running.

When it comes to generators, more is always better.
So get the largest watt unit you can afford.

LRA and FLA

When Rick says "it pulls more juce when it first starts up" he means; That is Locked Rotor Amps (LRA) and it is on the boiler plate of every electric motor. Most electric motors have a capacitor just for this purpose. It stores up energy for a quick blast to get the started and will be a high number. FLA or Full Load Amps is the exact amps it will require to operate. This is the number you need to be concerned with when purchasing a generator.
