Ugly Rings on Upholstery as it Dries...

June 8 2006 at 9:13 PM
Matt

I did a bunch of upholstery today, i used Releasit diluted about a fifth and the drill driver with fiber plus pad. I dont know a whole lot about upholstery, except when to clean or to dry clean. This couch was dark gray/brownish, and areas that were still wet when the whole bunch was done started to dry and these "circles" started to appear. Not perfect circles but rings of different sizes. I had to keep redoing it by spraying on more and hitting it up with the driver...the fiber was not plush, just flat normal upholstery. Anyone have any ideas?

Hard to say without seeing it however my first thought is that soiling from under material is wicking up. The fact that they are "rings" leads me to think the wicking may be from drink or some sort of liquid spills that had soaked into the cushion.

Don't happen to have a picture do you?

Where would I go to find an Upholstery class? I've looked for just carpet cleaning classes in my area (Mass) and rarely find any...

Mat,

you can take classes at Jon-Don Salem NH. 93 north to exit 2 bear right off the exit. Take your first right at the lights and then take Raymond ave. I believe it's number 7a.

Ralph

p.s. when I encap upholstery I use punch. and dilute it at 4-6 oz per gal..

if that's too far, call all your local suppliers/distributors and ask each if the hold any uph cleaning classes.

post this question on ICS also, you'll find more info there.

We have cleaned a lot of upholstery with encaps. The only issue we had so far was polymer residue and circling like you mentioned on a very tight knit acrylic designer piece.

To correct it:We brought it in the shop and wet cleaned it evenly force, dried it and then brushed the piece with a nylon brush. Looked great.
