| well i've been getting a little busier (for me anyways) and i am starting to LARGELY prefer commercial. i get so stressed before and at a resi job...especially when the client is home. moving furniture around and working around so much STUFF is...tedious. plus i am not making what i'd like to versus commercial CC'ing. i rarely get stressed on commercial and like the wage.
clients are very satisfied after either resi or comm....but i'm more satisfied after commercial lol.
not to mention, comm is so easy to find...wish resi was this easy.
what are your findings?
thanx --- Derek. |

I'm finding it much the same way. To do a $500 or $1000 commercial job is not that tough and doesn't take that long to do. But, to do $1000 residential day is a very good sized day and a lot more tedious and nursing along of the clients. I do like the immediate cash flow of the residential though. No waiting to get paid.
I am just finishing up 15 schools that I got the contract to do all the carpets for and that's a nice one to get. Another Bro. that lives here owns the largest janitorial firm in the area and he doesn't like to do carpets so I get all the carpets at my price. Now thats sweet.

So far I've been exclusively doing resi work. I want to get into commercial but I haven't decided on the best way to do so yet. I suppose I need to put together a flyer for commercial folks and then start walking into businesses.
Regarding furniture, usually people seem willing to work with me to get as much clutter out as possible. Sometimes they have even said to not move anything. Usually there will be a couch or two, maybe a coffee table and a lamp to work around. It can double the time it takes to do a room since you can't spray the entire room at one time and have to move things back and forth. I think a lot of companies charge extra for furniture moving, I haven't yet, but I did turn down one job where the lady had highly unrealistic expectations of what I would be moving. She "expected" me to individually remove each item from her china cabinet, take them to another room, and then move her highly fragile cabinet itself out of the room. This along with stacks of books everywhere, her dressers, several couches, coffee tables, etc. No thank you.
Bottom line I've had a couple of times where the job seemed to take quite a while moving around couches and coffee tables, but I guess the question you have to ask is what it's worth to you. I need the jobs and the $$ right now so I haven't made a big deal about it. If you really don't want to move much stuff around and tell them that up front, you might lose an occasional job, but they will know what to expect.

as long as you are upfront and relay your expectations to them about moving as much as they can, that you don't move breakables, you don't move electronic equipment or LARGE items like entertainment centers / piano's / grand-daddy clocks / etc... then i haven't come across a problem.
i don't move beds either. because cleaning around furniture takes longer, i charge wall-to-wall 100% of the time.
