Cimex on Fire!!!

Rambo

Today while cleaning with my 19" Cimex I kept smelling smoke/burnt odor. After about 30 minutes of this and not done with the job, a fire broke out of the small openings where the handles come out of the switch cover (the yellow plastic) I ran for a fire ext. but it went out before I could get back. Finished the job with the 15". After I got back to the shop and took it apart, I found the white wire inside the yellow plastic cover had broke and was arcing. all of the wiring inside the yellow plastic cover that holds the off/on switch had some damage, but was not too bad. I cut the cord just below the cord protector and rewired. I lost about 18" of cord, but everything is back to normal. Took about an hour. This unit has about 1500 hours on it. I still call it "My Moneymaker"

Safety

Ray, you're one lucky son of a gun.

We always plug out leads into a RCD (Residual Current Device), prior to plugging into the GPO (General Power Outlet), or socket?? wall outlet??

If anything like that happens, the RCD will detect it and shut the current off within 40 milliseconds.

Some say it is overkill on all our gear, but I prefer OVER to KILL.

We also use it on our air movers and dehums; that are left on site for extended periods with no one to see if a fire breaks out, = added insurance.

Cheers,

Shorty.

Shorty, that sounds like our "Ground Faults" This was in a medical office and they have very few ground faults. It wasn't all that bad, but it could have been. Where this wire seperated was in the plastic cover holding the on/off switch. why it seperated there does not make sense. But all is well now, and yes I am Thankful.

Sorry to hear about your short Ray. Guess we're gonna have to call you Sparky. Glad you didn't get a shock or experience any serious problems.

BTW, here's what we do with wrapping the cord on our Cimex machines. We wrap the cord around the handle one time. This prevents the kind of cord tugging that might cause a short in the switch box. And it also provides a place to hang a spray bottle of Spill Stain Treatment.

Take care Sparky

Great ideas. I like that idea for the spotting bottle.

Bungeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Leave a little slack in the cable near the control box and clamp a small length of rubber to it to avoid overstretching it.

I don't have it like that, but all my old polishers did.

I have the cable going down under the hook, then back up over the front of the control box and over my right shoulder, this allows me to flick the cable as required.

I hang my spotter from the rear of the solution tank, permanently.

Cheers,

Shorty.
