wool pricing question

March 25 2007 at 10:57 AM

Joe DeSouza

I cimex'd / encapped a wall to wall wool carpet last night at a fancy restaurant...The company is a good customer of mine and the facility mgr. trusts me, so told me to come and clean it, and bill him later, didnt even talk price....Question is, should I charge them more because it is wool? and...I had to do it at midnight last night, should I charge more for the inconvenience / P.I.T.A factor? The job went so quick, that even at .25 a foot I will average about $150 / hr, and it looks GREAT!

Thanks for your feedback

Joe

Joe, I personally do not charge extra for wool carpet unless there are issues with it that would slow productivity (as with any type fiber). It doesn’t sound like it took you extra time so why charge more? I also don’t charge more for night work but that is simply to stay competitive with the price. I do feel that it is worth more to me because my normal work hours are during the day. Sounds like @ $0.25 you are making what you would like per hour. Are you happy with $150.00 per hour working at midnight? If you would like to make a little more for the late hours charge a little more, bump it up to say $180.00 an hour for P.I.T.A. factor.

Why would you charge more just because it's wool?

I don't charge less because it's NOT wool.

Afterhours yes, that's valid but fibre type no.

I normally charge 1.5 times my normal rates for afterhours stuff with give and take depending on size of job, soiling, client history, recommendation etc.

$150-180 for afterhours is good money which ever way you look at it but will they accept it seeing as you never discussed earlier?

Regardless of what someone tells me, I ALWAYS price before I work... even if it is as you walk up and walk through before doing it. It always sets expectations before things are completed.
