Frieze... CRB,Poat Padding/Bonneting

Any thoughts on benefit of post padding/bonneting with rotaryon frieze? Would a high profile looped cotton bonnet work better, than a thin or thick cotton pads for absorption? Should one completely switch over to encap pads, to minimize tip bloom and sacrifice absorption? Would OP(depending on glider) be superior with frieze? What about use of a glider under a rotary any benefit? Also on a Frieze any issues with tip bloom from the use of brushes that are too aggressive? If so can additional "lubrication" lessen these tendencies? Thanks!

My thoughts on this are “just my thoughts” since I don’t own a CBM or an OP machine. Frieze is subject to tip bloom and I would be apprehensive to use an op machine, a glider along with plenty of cleaning solution for lubrication would help I’m sure but this wouldn’t be my choice. A CBM would be a great choice as the scrubbing action of this machine would be safe. I low moisture clean with a Dirt Napper and synthetic bonnets on my rotary. This does a nice job on frieze with no damage. I have never used a glider with a rotary although I have thought about using a small one to help with the “twist” that a rotary has in the very center of the bonnet.

All frieze style carpet (your talking about what we called in the old days;Shag) is done with the CRB machine here. I prefer verticle brushing action verses horizontal pad on the tips of the tuft bundles. IMHO you have far more chance of unwinding of the bundles (each tuft bundle has approx, 200 individual fibers in it that are twisted and heat set) also more chance of tip blooming. But if you like pushing the envelope, go for it.

Mr. Moody is I recall correctly you use some of the GLS machines, do you stay with one of the two residential carpet brushes or ever go on up to the green or yellow? I'd be nervouse about either the green or yellow, but the same would be true for me with rotary. In some ways I think the thick pile/looped bonnets (like the Wilen King Cotton) might be worse on a frieze/shag due to the surface contact of the loops with the fibers of the shag? Again, depending on how damp the surfaces were. Thanks!

Ray is right. Be very careful if you're planning on using any type of rotary or OP machine on a frieze. It is easy to untwist the fiber (tip bloom). A CRB machine would work better, or else just stick with HWE.

Richard...I too don't have CBM or OP and use HWE and bonnet primarily. Can I ask what you're using on frieze when you bonnet and are you using extra pre-spray as a "lubricant" when bonneting frieze?

I am looking at OP or CBM in the next few days as an extra tool.

You will find Mills recommending CRB machines but not OP

CleanEvolve, I use a "Dirt Napper" brush/bonnet from Powr-Flite, it is not quite as aggressive as a full sized synthetic bonnet because the actual bonnet is smaller and surrounded by the brushes on the driver and yes we do spray the encap cleaner a little heavier for lubrication.

As Rambo attests a CBM is the way to go. I have got to get one!

yea i gotta get one to Richard. was leaning towards a Steamin Demon 1st, but now am rethinking that.

i've used my Challenger on Frieze only twice. it was for a repeat customer...the owner of a flooring retail store who refers me surprisingly. he liked it so much the 1st time he called me back. i was real nervous the 1st time, used a glider and all. Steve Smith helped me out on the phone and said to use a glider and ThinOne's if i am that skeered. so i did. he said he was confident enough in his own skills to use cotton and no glider. so the 2nd time i did just that.

so if you have an OP, don't be afraid to use it (carefully if you are hesitant).

if you have other tools, try them. if i had all the tools, i would try them all and see which i liked best....practice, practice, practice.

thanx --- Derek.
