I always do it after.
Both seem to come out easier doing it that way and it makes sence
to me. anything over the grease and gum is now gone and you can
work on the offending area with out having to go through anything thing else

Your likely to use some sort of citrus solvent or solvent of your choice. In either case you have residue you need to contend with. I prefer to get the gum out, remove as much residue as possible, then as a final measure, encap over the area using my 50/50 trigger sprayer to encap any light remaining residue.

Steve Smith at TheCleanerImage (or John G. at CCS) has some great spotting products that are encapsulation cleaners. Steve has a wonderful gum and grease remover that dries to a white powder. So, you can do it before, or after cleaning.

Ken,

Take care of gum or tar first. A little dab of citrus gel is all that should be needed. Rub the spot and then blot up the gel. Then encap with the Cimex and Releasit like normal. No additional is required.

You can also take the 50/50 Releasit spotter and spray it directly on the gun and scrub with a bone or scraper and usually the gum comes up with that.
