| It was an amazing time. We got in about 8:30 AM Sat and relaxed until Scott Warrington came in about dinner time. We went to pick him up at the airport and then we all went out to dinner.
Sunday, we spent a couple of hours with some English speaking friends then relaxed the rest of the day until dinner time. We meet at a friend’s house for an ethnic dinner for about 15 of us – GOOOOD FOOOD.
Monday AM, Scott and I toured the facility with the Overseer and also the Department Head. We looked at all of their hard surface flooring as well as a few other areas. As to be expected it was in very good shape but we were able to point out a few minor things they might want to take into consideration. Once Scott and I compiled notes we started our training after lunch.
The responsibilities of the cleaning department seem endless; keep in mind on an incomplete list of surfaces I counted approximately 181,000 sq ft. They take care of all aspects of cleaning any interior space except light house keeping duties. They also take care of stripping & recoating vinyl and concrete flooring, T&G cleaning and maintenance, pest & rodent control, wall washing, window cleaning inside and out on 1st, 2nd, & 3rd floors, yearly roof cleaning, daily trash pick up & removal for aprx. 150 people, moving offices as well as all other furniture on an as needed basis, maintaining some exterior common areas, cleaning & maintaining carpeted areas, Night Watchmen duties, as well as other responsibilities – all done with a crew of 8, 4 during the day, 4 at night. Needless to say they keep very busy.
Monday afternoon through midday on Friday was spent either training in a classroom setting or hands on training in given tasks. We also spent time in meetings making a few recommendations for immediate things as well as things they will be implementing in the future.
Of course we also had a little time for fun as well. Friday afternoon we went to the Bacardi factory and Friday evening we had a very nice diner for about 20 of us out at the pool. Saturday we went to the rainforest and walked down 500 steps to the bottom of a waterfall. The change in elevation was 1,000 feet. What goes down – must go up. Saturday night Denise & I moaned ourselves to sleep with very sore legs. LOL Actually the rain forest was amazing – it gave you a little glimpse of a paradise. Once we left the rain forest we drove out to the beach. This was on the Atlantic side of the island. Honestly, at least in that area, they’ve got nothing on our beaches hear but it was still beautiful.
In the end we were very sad to leave, it was one of the best experiences in my life. There is a slim possibility that we might get to go back in a few months to help with a flooring project – we’ll see how things progress.

Sounds like a great trip David, and it brought back many memories for me. I have made over 70 trips to San Juan. We had the best store in our company there at Plaza Los Americas that did over a million a week in sales (and that was in the 80s) I used to bring back 150 proof Rum from the Bacardi factory on the plane for my friends. It was marked "flammable" You could never do that now. I miss the fresh Papayas served at breakfast there. Most of all the friendly people. I am confident that they picked the right Marble Man for the job, I don't know about Scott,LOL. Congratulations, hope you get to go again. |
