Dreaming in my dream room...

August 5 2007 at 8:21 PM

Joe DeSouza

Dreaming in my dream room yesterday, this is what I envisioned for a business model:

1)Being the salesman for my company, getting all dressed up & driving to nice commercial buildings to perform Needs Assessments and demo's. (Buildings with total Square footage between 5,000 - 50,000)

2) I would have 2 trucks, with 1-2 technicians per truck - each truck having a pair of cimexes, (1) OP, (1) CRB, and (1) 15 gal portable (1 truck will have a truckmount for residential work).

3)One truck would be cleaning high-end residential accounts during the day, in which the lead technician can perform carpet audits and estimates.

4)I will NOT have to clean carpets unless a tech calls in sick...I will be running the business and selling the commercial accounts...

Well...Does this seem like a workable model?

Has anyone done this (Be the salesman while others clean?)

Thanks for your opinions!!

Joe

PS Dream until your dreams come true, guys....

I like it!

The biggest problem with "Dreaming" is not generally that the dream is too large, it's that it's not large enough.

So make sure your dream is large enough to challenge you. After all, this will end up being a multi-year project for you.

Start by visualizing what the enterprise looks like. Look at it from all sides. See it fleshed out in your mind. Then take the keys in your hand and own it.

Now set out to build good replicatable systems so that the dream can be carried out with or without your direct daily intervention.

Every great business started just like we're talking about here.

I'm pleased to see you caught the idea of what we considered at the Wake Up And Dream session ar EncapFest. I wish you success as you begin to CREATE something special!

Go for it

Dreaming in my Naked Room........

August 5 2007, 9:08 PM

Terry Bradshaw (former Pittsburgh Steeler Quarterback) gave me the idea, LOL My dream is to have 10 Toyota Scion/ Chevy HHR, staffed with 2 women each doing nothing but highend residential. Each vehicle would be equiped with a Lindhaus vacuum, a 10"/15" CRB, an Oreck OP and a Multi-Sprayer. Girls don't like heavy macho stuff. All carpet would be cleaned at .30 a sq. ft. avg job 1500 sq. ft. with a $150 min. This would be a "Business in a Box' and duplicated across the country. I have been using a girl as a helper since Feb. and she has outcleaned all of the guys I have ever had. MaidBrigade has been adding carpet cleaning in my area for the past year using 10" GLS machines, no idea what chems their using.

Re: Dreaming in my Naked Room........

I am working towards my goal of not cleaning at all and running the business full time.
Notice I said goal not DREAM a dream is just a wish with no plan off attack on how to fulfill it.

It is great to look at things to get the taste in your mouth for what ever it may be a home car or business model, them comes the harder part formulating the plan of attack sticking to it and making alteration when needed.

I will agree with Rick people do not set high enough goals for them selfs so they do not stretch them selfs far enough and hard enough to get out of the comfort zone to do what really needs to be done. I include my self in that bunch.

This has been the most rewarding and frustrating year in an long time, having others do a much of the work and going out selling our company to others, coordinating projects with other contractors, and keep marketing when we are so busy Id rather rest.

I am liking running the business while others clean more and more, Happyness is taking a vacation with out worrying about what is going in the business because you have set up all the systems needed to keep things running smoothly while you enjoy. (not quite there yet but working on it )

Sounds a lot like the E Myth!!!!

Awesome thread guys.....

I also like to dream.... and then implement ways and plans to turn them into Goals also.

I've just taken a huge step in our plan, putting a receptionist on for 30 hours a week.... it took longer than I thought to reach that stage but we're here now finally...... but taht in reality is only a step in the overall plan.

By the end of the year or early next year, I hope to implement stage three which will be a brand new tech that will solely work with myself or my other full time tech as a backup/assistant.... they will work in this role for maybe 12 months learning all areas of the business until they are sufficiently trained to start taking on responsibility. After 6 months (or less if they are a go getter) I'll start reversing the roles on the van and get him to be the lead tech and either Jesse or I be the assistant to make sure he is competent in a lead role.

Once that stage is reached (hopefully co-inciding with the HP payments on 2 vans and TMs completing) then I want to step back to a nice vehicle without a TM and just do quoting, measuring, specialised stuff like my stain treatments, leather cleaning and repairs, carpet repairs, marketing etc and hopefully cut back to 3 days a week on the road and 2 part days working on the business and up to 2 part days OFF with family etc.

I definately believe it is achievable but I sometimes get impatient and get my time frames wrong.

I've no desire to totally get off the tools but would like to re focus my time into the stuff that I enjoy heaps or specialised stuff.
