Gelinas was tellin the truth!

A while back in a forum discussion concerning OP machines Rick made the statement that the Challenger was "One Smooth Ride". I have found this statement to be true. I recently got my hands on one, but there is a story. I was messin around on eBay and saw a Challenger for $25.00, and of course had to look. This thing had been abused and finally hurled down a flight of stairs (I later learned). The description was honest. They said that it would not run and had a lot of detailed pictures. The shipping was to be $110.00. Did'nt like the sound of that, but then I noticed that it was in a town only 40 miles from me. I emailed them and ask if I could pick it up if I won so there would be no shipping. They said yes and to shorten the story, I won it for $26.99. Got it home and found out the motor was fried, counter-balance bearing shot and also it did not have a pad driver with it. I ordered a new motor, pad driver, counter-balance and bearing assembly, and a new rubber bumper. I disassembled the machine completely, re-painted it, polished the chrome, straightened a big dent, and replaced nuts and bolts. I ended up with a new Challenger for $500.00. Have been using it and it is as smooth as silk. I have another OP from another company that I like and have used it for about a year but the Challenger is smoother. Here are a few pictures.

Having never used anything but a Cimex I am not sure how one of those is supposed to perform. However, it looks like you did a great job on restoring that thing. Great story and photos thanks for sharing.

Sweet Memories....

30% of the cost of new is a good deal. Great looking rehab of that Challenger. For years I posted about my "British Racing Green Challenger" how smooth it was in the corners and how fast it was on the straight away up against the baseboards. I took alot of flack for those post, but I still feel it is one of the smoothest out there. I still have fond memories about Kirk Jenkins, Jeff Brown and Mark Stanley bringing one of the first machines to my shop for testing.

I used a brand called Kilz. Turned out pretty good. I am really happy with the way things turned out.
