Fiber (Minus) Max Pads

November 20 2007 at 8:09 PM
Rambo

We just finished up a large commercial job today that had CGD olefin. We noticed that the grey max pads are gone after 3000 to 3500 sq. ft. We first thought it might be the machine, solution flow, etc, We tried a set of three that we had at the shop for over a year and were able to clean 10000 to 11000 sq, ft., so we know that it is not the Cimex, but the newer max pads. Has anyone else noted that these pads are not lasting as long?

I believe Rick did mention some time ago that they don't last as long as the regular pads.

FiberPlus MAX Pads

November 20 2007, 10:52 PM

Hi Ray,

As Patrick mentioned, the Max pads do not last quite as long as the standard beige FiberPlus pads. The elastomeric preperty in the beige FiberPlus pads gives them added stability and this helps the beige pads to last longer. The Max pads do not contain any of the elastomeric property. The grey pads definitely clean faster, yet they also wear out faster; so there's a trade off. Most cleaners tell us that they feel the speed of the cleaning with the Max pads offsets their shorter life.

When you're using synthetic pads to clean carpets there are several factors that can affect your pad wear (you already covered the aspect of flow in the Cimex head - poor flow can definitely reduce your pad life). Carpet construction is another thing that needs to be considered (for instance an olefin loop carpet wears out pads a lot faster than a nylon cut pile). And then there's also operator speed and cleaning technique that needs to be brought into the equation too. As a rule, the beige pads normally last about 3-5 hours of run time per set of pads. The Max pads normally get about 2-4 hours of run time. But as noted above - your mileage may vary. Another way to look at it is that $6 worth of pads should be able to produce an absolute bare minimum of AT LEAST $300 of profit or more.

I hope this helps to address your questions Ray. If you need help with anything at all you can always call me anytime. I'm always happy to talk with an old friend

OLD friend ??

November 20 2007, 11:06 PM

Ray's not really THAT old, just had a hard life due to the company he keeps on these forums

I have also noticed that the Grey Max's do wear a lot faster than the Beige Burnishers.

Maybe I am mistaken, but were we not getting better mileage with the Grey Max's a year or so ago??

Young Rays' equally young mate,

Shorty.

I've seen the light, and changed my wicked ways.

I agree

I don't have any of the old pads from a year ago but the latest order I got about 2-3 months ago the Grey are wearing way faster than i remember them from previous orders.

Change of formulation maybe? It's since they went to 8" I reckon. The old smaller ones (7 or 7.5") did last longer.

me too

I don't use the greys as much as the beige, but I am finding the beige don't seem to last as long as they did. Are they also slighty thinner?? My eyesight and memory is failing me in my old age so I could just be imagining this.

However they still make me a ton of money so it's small change.

Pad Manufacturing 101

November 21 2007, 6:56 AM

Sometimes there will be variances between one batch of pads and the next. We have used 3 different vendors for pads. And we have found that ALL of the the pad manufacturers have similar variances in pad density between batches.

The first pad manufacturer that we went with had terrible inconsistency problems. The second manufacturer had slightly better consistency than the first manufacturer, but then their factory burned to the ground. The third manufacturer that we now use appears to be producing the best quality pads we've found yet (we've been purchasing pads from them for about 4 years now).

I've toured the plant where our pads are made and here's what I've learned... How pads are made: The strands of raw fiber come out of a giant hopper. The fiber material is spread as evenly as possible across a flat surface where binder materials and colorant are then sprayed onto the pad material. The pad material is then baked. When the flat pad material rolls out of the oven, the pads are then cut into the appropriate diameter for the desired pad size.

There are two things I like about the manufacturer we are now using for our pads. First of all, their pads contain more raw fiber than the competitors we have purchased from in the past. In fact some of our competitors now sell pads for the Cimex (wherever did they get the idea to use pads on a Cimex machine? - LOL) and we frequently hear that their pads are not lasting nearly as long as our FiberPlus pads. The reason our pads generally last longer is because our pad formulation is fairly dense to begin with, and the manufacturer does a good job of holding to these standards when they build our pads.

The second thing that I like about our current pad manufacturer is that they are very good about standing behind the finished product. As an example, there was recently an entire batch of 8" beige pads that turned out bad. There was some kind of problem that occurred during the manufacturing process and a run of bad pads got through. We pulled all of the bad pads from that lot that we had in our inventory, and then the manufacturer drop shipped replacement pads to all of our customers who had already received bad pads out in the field. They picked up the tab and were QUICK to respond to make it right. Excellent care for a good customer is what I saw in this case!

Now getting back to what I was talking about with regards to variances in the pad density. There will always be some measure of variation in pad density, as long as pads are made on the earth. The density of how the fibrous material gets formed as it's dispensed from the hopper is subject to gravity. So there is margin for some variances from one batch to the next. However, as a rule the pads we are getting are generally pretty consistent.

So you can expect that our FiberPlus and FiberPlus Max pads will normally perform very well, within a fairly small window of tolerance. However if you are clearly seeing a shortcoming in your pad performance, please contact us and I'll see to it that the matter is taken care of. In fact, if you ever have a problem with anything you get from us (stuff happens), just give me a call 1-800-330-1888, or send me an e-mail rick@excellent-supply.com, and I'll see to it that you get taken care of right away! At Excellent Supply we try hard to give our customers "Excellent" service and we'll always do whatever it takes to make you happy.

Ok, All You Young Grasshoppers...........

November 21 2007, 8:01 AM

Thanks Rick for that explaination, I'll call Beth to order some more to compare with what we have on hand and let you know the results. You are the King of Customer Service! Thanks to my friend from down under saying that I'm a young mate, and to Rick for saying "old friend" both have special meaning to me. If you are healthy, age means nothing in this business. We have added another truck to gear up for next year. I had slowed my business down the last couple of years, but am not happy with it so I am excited about kicking it up a notch. At this point in my life I am fully convinced that age is a state of mind. I always get a smile on my face when I see a post about " Well, I'm over 50 and don't know how much longer I can do this" Let me say, I past that milestone 20 plus years ago and you can do it. With the equipment and chems that are available to day, this industry is soooo much easier then we were draging hoses from our trucks. One example is the Cimex, you push, the machine does the work. Can you imagine pulling the wand on a 18000 sq. ft. job like we did yesterday in 6 hours w/o breaking a sweat. Sorry, I started Rambo-ling again.

Tel ya what Ray. How bout I send you a free box of Max pads so you can compare 'em.

When I say old - it's on account of knowing you for about 10 years or so now (plus you are a couple of years older than me too - gotta respect my elders). I'm happy to say I've learned a few things (and continue to learn) from my "old friend". Thanks Ray!

Take care bud!

How much for the pads made upstairs...

Unquote.

So Rick, you have contacts higher up, does that mean if we pay more, we can get pads from elsewhere?

Or are these kept strictly for your 'older' clientele?

LOL
