Cimex tripping circuit breaker...

December 8 2007 at 8:11 AM

Joe DeSouza

My Cimex occasionally trips a circuit breaker when I turn it on...It only happens once in a while. The weird thing is that I had it plugged into a 20 amp circuit the other day and it trip that one too...One time i did see a flash (an arc) under the motor cover when starting up...I wonder if somehow an arc is jumping across leads or something and tripping the breaker. Anyone else experience this?

Thanks

Joe

PS for the most part, it works great, just once in a while it does this...

It would be a good idea to get that looked at. If it's arching and sparking there's something wrong.

I'd suggest bringing it to an electric motor repair shop and have them do some bench testing.

It's better to be safe.

LRA (locked rotor amps)

Most motors have a starting capactior and a run capicitor. The reason for it, it takes a lot of current to get the motor going especially if it is on the carpet and has pads or brushes on it. We have ALWAYS lifted the pads off the carpet during the start up as it puts a lot of strain on the motor. We also make sure the pads/brushes are wet before they touch the carpet. One of our Cimexes has 0ver 3000 hours on it and starting has never been a problem.

Except mine doesn't have as many hours on it..................yet

The initial startup of an electrical motor gives "surge, or spike, of power" if you like, this is only for a brief moment to get the motor running.

With the motor running, the power required drops.

Compare it with a car engine if you like.

You start in first gear, using more fuel, as you pick up speed, you go up through the gears, using less fuel with each higher gear.

This is until you go faster until you put more strain on the engine it in turn, requires more fuel to supply more power.

In most electrical motors, a small flash may be seen on start up, but if it is causing tripping, there may be a short circuit or other problem that an electrician will need to rectify.

Try this if you want to give your friends a laugh.

With your lawn mower engine running, disconnect the spark plug lead & see if you can jump in time with the spark.

Every time you touch earth, it sparks, and you jump again.

WARNING ::: DO NOT TRY THE ABOVE UNLESS YOU ARE A COMPLETE IDIOT.

I grew out of that stage

It's probably what stunted your growth.  Did you stand in a pool of ale while doing that, it would make it all that more.....electrifying.  And make you a very grounded man too.

Shocking revelation Shorty.

Now I understand what happened to your hair.

In the Sheep/wool industry, they were trialling a few years back giving the sheep an electric shock. That creates a break in the wool and it all falls out...

This talk of "shocking" people and sheep reminds me of a T-Shirt I used to have.

Keep in mind I used to be a Corrections Officer and worked on Death Row in Arizona.  The T-Shirt was from when they executed Ted Bundy in Florida.  The T-Shirt said: "Justice- Regular or Extra Crispy".

All those years in Law Enforcement gives you a warped sense of humor sometimes I guess.

Check to make sure you have not pulled a wire off the switch, this can happen and cause a short that will blow a breaker, simple to fix. My guys do this once in a while when they try to go 55 feet from the outlet, and of course the machine comes with a 50 foot cord, net result pulls a wire off somewhere on your machine.

How do you know how many hours you have on your Cimex. Mine does not have an hour meter.

Hour meters for your Cimex

December 9 2007, 8:23 PM

Keven, you can mount one on the back of the directional and on/off switch. remove the screws that hold the switch to the handle (the yellow plastic) and drill a couple of holes and mount the counter, they are very small Take the wire from the counter and wrap it around the hot wire (black one) about 3 times, every time you have current going to the machine the counter will be working. You see these on some portables. Web site for these counters is www. tecknowledge.com or enmco.thomasnet.com They cost less than $25.00 Most don't care how many hours the Cimex runs, but if you do..........

I blew a breaker once and since that day I always lift.
For me, blowing a breaker can add 30-60 mins to a job.
