Any way to make a website yourself?March 1 2008 at 4:39 AM | Thomas Owens |
| I talked to a friend of mine to put a website together would cost around $700+ dollars.
Have any of you found a way to put a nice website together on your own?
Thanks.

GoDaddy is a cheap place to register a site. However, their hosting is not so hot. I'd shop around for a better web host.
You can do some html with a program like MS FrontPage. DreamWeaver is another option, but it isn't as intuitive as FrontPage. In their infinite wisdom, Microsoft has now replaced FrontPage with a garbage program called Expression Web. I'd recommend buying an older copy of FrontPage on eBay or somewhere else if you're interested in it. Another option is CoffeeCup - http://www.coffeecup.com
You can start off with a template from a source like Pixel Mill...

You can actually create a good looking site like that.
However it may be even better to hire a pro. For example, I can do a lot of the lighter web design stuff myself with FrontPage. But I call in a professional when it comes time for the heavy stuff. I have an AWESOME web guy who is a friend of mine. His name is Justin Griego. Justin was responsible for the most recent makeover of this website. Sometimes you just need to hire a pro. Kind of like when your customers call you. Sure your customer can vacuum and wipe up spills. But in time they're gonna need to consider your pro services. Same goes for developing a website that represents your companies image.

They have templates for you to use. You can also upload your own HTML if you want to. I have been very happy with them for over a year now, they also have the ability to give you a merchant account you can also integrate into your website.

If you make your own, it will look like you made your own
but if you're happy with that...then it dont really matter. |

Thank you everyone for your suggestions.
I really don't want my site to look like a newbie made it, which it probably will, if I made it, since I am a computer newbie.
I guess I just had some sticker shock because I had no idea how much a pro would charge to make one for you. Now that I've done some homework, I realize how much these things will cost. Illustrates how important educating a customer is.
I'm leaning towards getting a pro to do it now. I kind of hate computer stuff. Making a simple spreadsheet drives me crazy. It might take me so long, I will be making $20 an hour after it's all said and done. And probably come out with a website that will detract instead of add to the image I am trying to portray.
I'm always thinking of ways to save money (I'm part Chinese, LOL), but more and more I'm learning that there are many things that you just need to pay for and get on with life.

Thomas,
The guy that does my website work is a pro. He has done it for years. He can code in his sleep. His work is dead on perfect. And best of all, his prices are very reasonable. If you'd like his contact info let me know.

Local guy, who's son is on my son's baseball and football team, does the high school website. He told me he would build me a site for $595.00. I figured for that amount, what the heck, I'd give it a try.
It may look like crap, but I think the dude is for real. |

Rick,
Just had a chance to talk with your web guy. I'm looking forward to working with him. He's definitely a pro, yet charges a very reasonable rate.
He also has a good understanding of carpet and floor care.
Thanks again for the reference. |
