mildew on boat headliner

Bill Youmans

hey guys,

ran into a lady who wants me to try to clean the headliner of the interior of her boat (I'm near annapolis, lotsa boats here), looked at it today, has alot of mildew stains, I tested a little area using relistit and a small obital buffer with a cotton pad. All it really did was lighten them a little, still real obvious. She's ok with that, but, I'd really like to impress my clients. Anyone have any ideas (by the way, I also tried sponge & brush by hand)

thanks
Bill Y

Mildew/Mold on boat headliner easy miracle cure!

July 10 2008, 9:32 PM

My husband and I have owned three different Sea Ray power boats in the past, ALL with tan fabric headliner. Each of the 3 boats had brown stains (appeared to be old water stains) on the headliner.

Look closer and see if the stains are orange in color. The back of the fabric headliner is an orange color foam, which could be bleeding through old fabric in some areas.

Otherwise, take a bottle of peroxide from the drug store ($1) and put it into a spray bottle ($1).

Cover items below so liquid doesn't spill or mist overspray anywhere other than on the headliner.

Spray headliner GENEROUSLY with the peroxide...in fact you can saturate it so it's wet. Wait until the peroxide begins to bleach out the stains. This will disolve the brown stains and lighten the headliner a tiny bit...unnoticable to your client's eye.

This is a trick from a carpet cleaning service in Los Angeles, CA. Trust us, it's amazing how well it works. Hiring a carpet cleaner to "clean" the headliner for you using a carpet cleaning machine won't work. Just "do it yoursef"...it's so simple. No scrubbing and it dries on it's own.

We used around 5 bottles of peroxide on our last boat which was a 33' Express Cruiser.

Good luck!
