Mac Question...

August 23 2008 at 8:00 PM

Joe DeSouza

Is there any utilities that come with a Mac that can defrag the disk, clean out cookies, etc. like windows? I cant find any, but the computer is running just a little slower lately so I want to clean it out...

Thanks

Joe

Macs don't fragment as badly as a Windows machine. Defragging is seldom, if ever, needed. The OS and the hard-drive do not run like Windows. Fragmenting is not as much of an issue.

This ain't Windows. There's far less need for maintaining a wacked operating system. Yet hard-drives still can become less structured and cahes still fill up. So a little maintenance may at times be required.

I've been running Macs for just over a year now. I've tried a few utilities and I've done some research. I've discovered that only 2 utilities are needed. Simple as that.

For disk rescue and optimization the only tool to consider is Disk Warrior.
http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/index.html

For cache cleaning and general maintenance it's MainMenu.
http://www.santasw.com/

MainMenu actually just runs the Mac utilities that are already in the OS. The only thing is, you'd never dig 'em up and run them on your own. MainMenu does it for you. Best of all it's free.

Disk Warrior rocks too!

These two utillities will keep your Macs running as if they were new. Read the reviews. These programs are all you need.

Swift Publisher is very nice. Simple to use and it does excellent work.
It's as easy to work with as MS Publisher, but it is much cooler and produces much better results.

I have Adobe Illustrator, yet I find myself using Swift Publisher more and more for just about everything that I design. Illustrator is a pain to work with and costs over $300. By comparison, Swift Publisher sells for $45 and produces superb looking material without the huge learning curve that Illustrator has.

Use Office for Mac!

August 24 2008, 2:00 PM

I bought office for Mac because most if not all of by biz stuff is on word...Well, I'll tell ya, Word for mac has AWESOME features for graphic design...and thats coming from a former graphic designer. Some of the capabilities are incredible - I really dont even use photoshop / illustrator that much anymore because word for mac handles it. They have awesome templates, too. What I do is get the CMS stuff and modify it to my own specs, it works out very well. If someone would show me how to link a pDF to this site I can post one for you guys to look at...

Publishing a QUICK webpage using iWeb and MobileMe

August 24 2008, 3:44 PM

On a Mac using MobileMe, here's a simple way to show us your stuff. Takes about 2 minutes.

1. Open iWeb.

2. Create a new site, and give the site whetever name you'd like.

3. Drag your PDF file from your desktop to your new page in iWeb. Resize as needed.

4. Publish to MobileMe.

5. Copy and paste the web address into your post here.

Like this...

P.S. The ad you see here was created with Swift Publisher.

P.P.S. MS Office for the Mac is a really good software suite.
In fact it's a lot better than Office for Windows. Go figure.

Here it is

August 24 2008, 6:52 PM

Here you go - an example of my wifes work using office for mac. This is our newest flyer that we will be using for Class A buildings, along with the CMS program. My wife has been recently doing a lot of graphic design and copywriting for some organizations. If anyone is interested in having similar work done, including flyers, websites, etc. give me a shout - she really has an eye for graphics and she will be reasonable, because y'all are my friends!

Heres the link: http://web.me.com/jodyzuza1/Site/Blank.html

Joe that looks terrific. You should be proud of that. Very nice!

And I see you were able to upload a simple iWeb page - it's easy isn't it?
