| We went to the Apple store a few times
very friendly people there.
I am curious at if anyone is running an IMac what model they purchased. I was told the lower end model would do , so I thought I'd ask here.
Since the IMac can run windows and my PC I built 5 years ago is now out dated time to give the Mac a try

This apple line is far superior to pc. I was a pc guy for many many years I have the 2.4 imac and love it tons of power and so smooth. Also purchased a mac mini and a powerbook. Love them all. Go for it. |

The entry level iMac is plenty good. But you will want to add another meg of RAM. it runs a LOT FASTER with 2 megs. After market Ram can be purchased for less than $35

I have one of last year's lower-end iMac's at home. And we have 4 newer lower-end iMacs at the office. That's all the horsepower I need! They are soooo much slicker running than our old Windows PC's. We also have an entry level MacBook and a top-end black MacBook. They all perform very well under moderately heavy usage.

Thanks guys
I'll be running Windows on it also due to some of my scheduling software. $35 beats the 100 they want to charge you at the store.
I am hoping this will save me a lot of time in my marketing materials.

Wow, the imac only needs 2 megabytes of ram? Talk about efficient.
I know you meant gigs.
One day I will need to try a mac for myself. I think I'm just afraid that all the software I'm used to running won't work, but I'm sure that's not a problem. Just fear of the unknown.

Thomas,
Thanks - yep I meant 2 gigs.
The software you're used to using will run fine on a Mac. Install Fusion and a copy of Windows XP (you no doubt have an old copy of Windows lying around). If you don't have a copy of Windows, you can purchase an OEM copy for $139 from TigerDirect http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2571830&CatId=672
With Fusion, you can run Windows just like you would on a PC. Well not exactly the same; on a Mac it's not as likely to lock up and crash.
We run Windows accounting software in Fusion (in a Workgroup setting). We run Windows UPS shipping software in Fusion. We run a UPS label printer in Fusion. We run a Windows barcode software program in Fusion. We run a barcode label printer program in Fusion. We have a Windows cordless barcode scanner attached to the shipping computer running in Fusion. I run my favorite Windows based research program in Fusion. I run some flash design software in Windows. I have FrontPage for Windows and I have MS Office for Windows, although I don't use them much.
Bottom line, Windows runs smoother on a Mac than on a PC. Windows programs run flawlessly from within the Mac operating system, running in Fusion. You can drop files from the Windows desktop directly to the Mac desktop and you can share your Windows devices such as printers and scanners.

Office has more horsepower than iWork. But I think iWork is suitable for just about everything. Our office staff is only equipped with iWork and we're running a business on it just fine.
I own MS Office for Mac as well as iWork. How do they compare? We like Numbers better than Excel. And we like Keynote better than Powerpoint. Word has more features than Pages. The CMS program requires MS Office.
Keep in mind, if you're planning to run Fusion, you could always run a Windows version of Office.

Thanks Rick. I'll keep that Fusion program in mind.
The only problem I seem to be having is that I can't find the iMac in the products section of your website. You do sell them right? |

Congrats David!
It is a little different working with the Mac operating system, but once you get used to it, you're gonna love it. When I have to work on a Windows computer now, I hate it. Windows feels like a Model-T compared to the Mac OS.
As far as USB goes... Get yourself a good USB hub. Avoid Belkin hubs, they are the worst. I did some research and then purchased 5 of these hubs. http://www.usbgear.com/usbg-7u2.html
Enjoy your new Mac. I'll be waiting for my commission check from Apple.

David,
Did you call Apple about that, before bringing it back.
There may be a simple fix that they can walk you through.
I replaced some Ram in one of my iMac's and the fan went into an overdrive mode of some kind. The fan kept running at a high speed and it sounded real weird. I called Apple and they instructed me to shut down the iMac and then power it up while holding a couple of keys (I can't remember which ones). That took care of it.
These things are fairly bullet-proof.
Enjoy!

| Thanks Bigger problem now | September 8 2008, 7:02 PM |
Thanks Rick
I did not call, but I think I know the problem.
It only happens when coming out of sleep mode, I freaked out both times and shut it down and it stopped.
The last time I just let run for a while for the wife to hear, then it dawned on me the power supply fan or cooling fan was boosting up. In a minute is stopped.
My PC does this but the sound is different due to its location and the fact it is a monster so it make more of a whooshing sound.
One to the bigger problem I need another on. I do a lot of work in the home office as well and logging into the mac via LogMEIN from home will be a pain. Getting another one is not the problem
What to get my WIFE to schmooze her good is my problem, and just going away for the weekend at a freinds beach house for our anniversary like I plan just is not going to do it.

Two things Daivd...
1. LogMeIn works better in FireFox on a Mac than it does with the Safari browser. In fact I think I like the latest version of Firefox better than Safari all the way around.
2. If you decide to opt for a MobileMe account, it has a cool feature called BackToMyMac that enables "Screen Sharing" and disk synching between your Macs (like LogMeIn). Plus it can host websites and photo galleries on the fly. And it enables you to synch your data such as e-mail's, calendars, etc, between devices. It's almost worth its $99 a year price tag.

| Barcode Label Printer | June 15 2010, 6:57 AM |
I am new to the world of barcode labels and need some advice and suggestions on which barcode label printer to go for? I have already been told that the Printronix and the Zebra range are very good but would like a bit more input.
Thanks in advance |
