Rug pit details

October 25 2008 at 4:25 PM
Matt

We are looking into building a rug pit, demand seems to have necesitated it. We have about 500SF, drainage, high celling clearance...and a Cimex.

Is there a "list" of things I could find that would show me what it will cost and take to make this work? I know several folks here do it succesfully.

Any rugs you can't wash in a rug pit?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Here is what we have done

October 27 2008, 4:34 PM

We built a rug washing pit in our office and have it on a webcam so feel free to look at it. www.pearsoncarpetcare.com and click on webcam.

Our pit is built up on a 2x12 platform or deck. We used the 2x12's that came off the foundation when we poured the slab to the building. Then there is 10" pvc pipe that makes the pit and it is lined with the yellow pond liner. We then went and bought some pallet racking for the rug drying rack. We only bought the ends no shelving. Then we bought some 2" square tubing to hang the pulleys and poles from and it also holds the pallet racking upright. The pulleys we bought from tractor supply. They are only double gang pulleys but they hold 600 pounds a piece and were only $8.00 each. Compared to triple gang marine pulleys that are $150.00 each this is a great bargain.

There are rugs that we don't wash for various reasons. Some rugs come in and frankly they aren't dirty so a good rug badgering and Cimex with Releasit is sufficient. Some we don't wash because of color bled problems. If you are new to this you must test every rug to make sure it is color fast before washing. We don't colorfast test every rug but the again I have been doing it for 16 years and have seen a lot of rugs and am willing to risk it on some.

Also, washing a rug without rug badgering it or blowing it out with compressed air is not going to clean it thoroughly. You may think that washing a rug will remove all the soil by itself and it won't. You must remove the dry dirt before washing.

Feel free to call me or email me if you need more info.
