Also here is a DIFFERENT text interview that was asked by Rich Eden.
1) How long have you been a rug sucka' for?
23 years in business for myself. I have cleaned around 10,000 homes in my career.
2) How did you get started cleaning carpets?
I lost my job in small appliances. I had just bought a home, was newly married and had a baby (Tre,who now is 26). Desperate times call for desperate measures. I remember Sandee and I went door to door selling carpet spotters. At one house a lady asked me if I would clean her carpets. I said sure, went home and got a Kirby vacuum shampooer and did the job. Customer kiddingly said she could have done that. So I went to a hardware store bought sheet metal and fitted it over the Kirby. I cleaned till I could afford a Von Schrader and then over the years I have built it to a strong and profitable running 4 truck mount operation. I had more trucks before, but I enjoy being this size. I grew too fast for awhile and now I am revamping my whole company from top to bottom to give it a much stronger foundation and fresh look to run off in the future. It's added a lot of excitement and we'll see where it takes us!
3) What are the top 3 things you attribute to your successful business?
Top 3? Hmm,Sandee, Tre and hunger,lol.
Now the three outside forces we're the 3 principles in business I live by.
1)Treat people the way I want to be treated. People do business with people. We like to have fun while still being respectful. My customers love our friendly, confident and positive people.
2)Proverb, "Have you beheld a man skilled at his work? He will station himself before kings."
Wow what can I say? Nothing means more than quality. I strive everyday to be better and increase my knowledge. Customers and employees sense my commitment and it creates lifelong customers.
3)What you do speaks so loud I can't hear what you say.
Customers are sometimes two-faced. They will tell you that you are great to your face but when you leave they will say, I'll never have that guy back again. So you can tell the customer that your are the best thing since sliced bread but if your not delivering then "what you do will speak so loud they wont be able to hear what you say."
4) How do you manage your time?
Carefully. I am a STRONG proponent of writing everything down. Each year I write a business plan with a list of things to accomplish by the end of the year. I will say this, EVERYTHING I have ever written down I have accomplished. There is something about the human mind that has the ability to practically fulfill anything you write down. I have made up a one page sheet that I write it down on and then I add and subtract thru-out the year as I accomplish my goals. So I know I drive some crazy around me but I tell them if you really want to be successful, then WRITE it down!
5) What do you enjoy doing when you have time off?
Golf, basketball and lately I have become addicted to Flashchat here on TMF. It's really cool being able to instantly chat with cleaners worldwide to share knowledge, inquire about industry matters and just flat out shoot the breeze. It's a blast! My wife thinks I'm crazy sometimes because Im laughing at the laptop. Also I have become quite a typist too.
6)Feel free to add anything else too!
anything else.
I have always said "success is the progressive realization of a goal". It is fulfilling and rewarding to accomplish our goals. But it is even more important to realize life is short, so have fun, love God, your family and friends. Because you can't take it with you with your gone but you will pass on your legacy to your next generation.
