We have cut our long distance and overseas phone calls by using Skype & Yahoo.
Delia talks to her family in the Philippines every day for an hour (at least), for free.

With Skype you can make free calls over the internet to other people on Skype for as long as you like, to wherever you like. It is free to download.
Yahoo is the same type of system.
For a few dollars to purchase a webcam, download the program, (or both), use your current speakers, and you're in business.
A webcam is not needed, but is good for a face to face conversation.
(Provided one is dressed when a call comes in.
)
I'm unsure as to what the most popular system is in the 'states.
