Is it safe to prevacuum with a TM4 using the standard white brushes on residential cut pile? I tried it at home and it seems like it is picking up a lot of the carpet fibers.

Gary, I use my CRB on my own carpet prior to vacuuming to pull pet hair and any deep down dry soil to the surface. I also use this same practice on clients homes that have pets, and I've never had a problem with it. As a matter of fact the clients are really surprised at the amount of hair that is still in there carpets after they have vacuumed.

I did a house for a lady last week that had vacuumed twice before we arrived with her Dyson. She had two dogs and two
cats. After going over the carpet with the CRB we removed two vacuum bags worth of pets hair and other imbedded soil. She wasn't to happy with her Dyson after that.

The standard white brushes are fairly soft. Yet the bristles are a little bit denser than a standard vacuum cleaner brush roller. So exercise a measure of caution on soft fibers (ie cut pile, frieze, etc) and pay attention if it looks like it's distorting the fiber or causing a lot of shedding. As a rule though, the white brushes should be OK for most residential carpets.
