Depends. On fairly clean residential and commercial I never prespray, just spot and begin cleaning. The encap chems will easily clean on contact with relatively clean carpet. Trashed residential I always prescrub (instead of prespray). on bad commercial ill actually prespray traffic lanes, or the whole thing if all of it is bad.
