I'm certainly not an expert concerning referrals. But I think you have to look at it from what you gain instead of what you pay. Gaining a customer is huge
as that customer now becomes a referral source and on and on. I personally know of a situation where one cleaner is extremely successful with his referral program and looks at it the way I described. He set it up for a new guy to use in a different area, this guy kept looking at what he was giving up and kept saying I don't think I need to do this anymore, he's out of business now.
Most successful residential cleaners I know have a formal referral program.
In commercial (which is all I do) I've never had to offer an type of referral program I've just asked and they are happy to refer you when the opportunity presents itself. If you do a good job, are extremely dependable, and go out of your way for them.
