Hi Bill,
I am sure Rick or Shorty will chime in with some great advice. On carpets that are 40 years old and havnt been cleaned in 7 years HWE might be the right choice. Since I do not have HWE as an option let me share what I have done on extra nasty carpets. I spot treat all stains with Hydrox first. I find Hydrox works best when it is allowed to work for 10 to 15 minutes before the next step. I then use a cotton or microfiber pad to extract dirty areas using punch. The final step is DS with a fibre plus pad. It is the extra agressive pad. It is a bit extra work, but the results have been quite good for me on really bad carpets since all I do is low moisture cleaning.
