If you want to take the machine to the left, you lift the handle up.

If you want the machine to go to the right, you lower the handle down.

Shorty lives in Australia. And as we know, down under everything runs backwards. 

Actually if you tip the handle upward, a rotary will steer to the right. 
And if you dip the handle downward, it will veer to the left. 
At least that's how it works in the northern hemisphere.
