I think the only safe approach would be to NOT mess with the (now damaged) threaded pipe extending out of the tank. You may be opening pandora's box. Instead, I'd recommend slipping a hose over the threaded pipe, fastening it with a hose clamp. Then a couple of inches down the hose, you could install a new mid-hose ball valve if you'd like.

I have replaced all back on again with liberal amounts of thread sealant & it's no longer leaking.

At the moment.

Not working today due to very heavy rain, so I'll see if I can get some tubing as suggested.

Glad someone still thinks in inches, not mm.
