That is what the landlord asked me to do with this basement unit. Carpet is probably 20 years old. Who knows when it was cleaned last, but every square inch was covered with grease and grime.
I pre-vac'd (which I hated to do to my vacuum...), pre-sprayed with punch, then went at it with the Sprayborg (with Punch), MF Beasts followed with zorbs. Outside of some permanent greying, it really came out pretty well.
As far as the stairs, I forgot to take the "after" pics. I used punch, extracted with a small spotter, then sprayed punch again and use an Oreck Orbiter. It came out pretty well too.
Punch is awesome. I use it everyday as a pre-spray, and for the really nasty stuff.
So the LL got his "one more year," probably for the 5th or 6th year in a row....
