Can anyone tell me what there experience is of having a free phone number for their business. Does it increase enquiries or are there any other benefits or downfalls of using one?

Toll free numbers are ok if you're in an area that has various nearby area codes. A toll-free number costs more money. We have had a toll-free number for many years. But nowadays, everyone has unlimited calling anywhere in the nation. So the advantage of a toll-free number is much more limited than it once was.
You might also think about getting a vanity number. My brother was able to get 1-800-Marbleguy for his stone restoration business. A vanity number can be a cool marketing option.
